French fans will hope for slightly more goalmouth action in Ligue 1 this weekend after the last round of fixtures produced just 11 goals in 10 matches.

The most surprising result last weekend saw league leaders, and reigning champions, Lyon draw 0-0 at home with bottom club Valenciennes on a heavily rain-soaked Stade Gerland pitch.

But none of Lyon's main title rivals were able to take real advantage, with Marseille being held to a goalless draw at Toulouse and last season's runners-up Bordeaux drawing 0-0 at second-bottom Sochaux.

Bordeaux are in action first this weekend when they host Valenciennes on Friday evening, a game brought forward to allow Bordeaux more time to prepare for their crucial Champions League clash with Roma on Tuesday.

Game of the day on Saturday sees third-placed Marseille host fourth-placed Nice at Stade Velodrome.

Nice missed out on the chance to hold onto second place when their game against Grenoble last weekend was cancelled due to a waterlogged pitch.

But they will be encouraged by the poor form of their south coast rivals, who are without a win in their last four matches in all competitions.

With the big guns failing to fire last weekend it was Rennes who seized the initiative.

Midfielder Bruno Cheyrou's goal on the stroke of half-time earned them a 1-0 win over Paris St Germain that took them up to second in the table and extended their unbeaten run to 14 matches.

With Lyon not playing at Nantes until the evening, a win for Rennes at 11th-placed Caen on Saturday afternoon will move them to within two points of the leaders.

"Being in second place, that's fine," said coach Guy Lacombe. "It is more important to be second at the end of the season but this will boost us.

"As for first place, you never know. Lyon are designed to win and it is going to be tough to catch up with them."

Alain Perrin's Saint Etienne will look to pull even further away from the relegation zone when they welcome third-bottom Le Havre to Stade Geoffrey-Guichard on Saturday, having moved out of the bottom three with a 2-1 win at Nancy last weekend.

Friday

Bordeaux v Valenciennes (1800GMT)

Saturday (1800GMT unless stated)

Caen v Rennes, Lille v Toulouse, Marseille v Nice, Nantes v Lyon (2000GMT), St Etienne v Le Havre

Sunday (1600GMT unless stated)

Grenoble v Auxerre, Lorient v Nancy, Monaco v Sochaux, PSG v Le Mans (2000GMT)
